Documentary based on the book of the same name by Naomi Klein explaining the rise in “disaster capitalism”: the exploitation of moments of crisis by governments and big companies which loot the economies of vulnerable countries. The film traces the birth of Milton Friedman’s radical theories at Chicago University and their application over the last 40 years in countries and situations as widely varying as Pinochet’s Chile, Yeltsin’s Russia, Thatcher’s UK and, more recently, the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. The Shock Doctrine reveals the darkest side of Friedman’s ideology, so unpopular that it could only be imposed through torture and repression.
