LE PAPIER NE PEUT PAS ENVELOPPER LA BRAISE (2006)
Prestigious Cambodian moviemaker Rithy Panh –present at the festival a few years ago with the chilling S21. La machine de mort khmère rouge (2002)– comes as close as he can to the life –and spiritual death– of a prostitute. The social decomposition is rounded off with the irreparable injustice of an irreversible process: destruction of the body. The filmmaker portrays the everyday lives of a group of prostitutes in Phnom Penh (Cambodia): the lives, work, suffering and sometimes dreams of women condemned to sell themselves body and soul.
“– Why don’t you go home to your village?
– I don’t want to... I’m ashamed.
– Nobody knows what’s happened to you. I can help you if you want. Go home.
– No. I’m ashamed. Nobody knows what I do in Phnom Penh. But I know.
– I’d like to make a film about your life”.
