CHECHNYA: GENOCIDE FOR STRATEGIC INTERESTS?

Out of competition

barzakh

A man disappears from a Chechen city recovering from war. While life follows its everyday course, those trying to find him are drawn into a world where meeting divine and human advisors, torturers and the tortured, secret prisoners and mythical lakes becomes commonplace. When the disappeared return in dreams, they say that they have come from Barzakh, a land somewhere between the living and the dead.

First work by the Lithuanian Mantas Kvedaravicius, who has been investigating cases of torture and disappearance in the North Caucasus since 2006. Produced by the Finnish filmmaker, Aki Kaurismäki.
