Traces of change in the arab region

ARAB REVOLTS

huellas de cambio en la region arabe

Traces of Change in Egypt is the title of a programme launched by several Egyptian filmmakers during the uprising, coordinated by Irit Neidhardt and sponsored by Berlin Festival’s Forum section. Independent Egyptian moviemakers play an important part in the country’s democratic movements. In fact, Egypt has the most important film industry in the Arab world and controls its market.

Using the example of Egyptian shorts and trailers by a handful of independent features, this session presents the ideas underlying the Egyptian movie scene. Tamer el Said, an independent producer and director from Cairo, and Irit Neidhardt, producer and distributor of films from the Middle East at Berlin, discuss the relationship between independent cinema and Egyptian society before the revolution and now, when the country is in the full swing of transformation. They will also talk about the cooperation that has emerged in the two last decades between filmmakers from Egypt and Arab countries and their relation with the revolutionary movements that have been sending shock waves through North Africa and the Middle East in recent weeks.
