Disability and art

According to UN calculations, a 10% of the world population suffers from some kind of disability. These are people who refuse to continue suffering margination and discrimination and who, thanks to the work and backing of associations, have gained recognition and protection of their rights at local and international level. They have even succeeded in achieving proclamation by the UN of a Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

One of the channels used by this group to demonstrate their strength and their refusal to accept their sort has been artistic expressions. The universal language of music has particularly served many people with disability as a form of expression and communication and as a means of contributing to their personal emancipation and social recognition. As reflected in this documentary, disability, together with poverty, sharpens the wits and the senses, sometimes even to the extent of offering the chance to break through the prejudice and leave social exclusion behind.

History has also shown us that the great personalities affected by some kind of a disability have been and continue to be references in the worlds of art, science, sport...
