After Grizzly Man (2005), Encounters at the End of the World (2007) and Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010), Werner Herzog looks in a new documentary at two death row inmates: Michael Perry (executed 8 days after the interview appearing in the film) and Jason Burkett, both convicted of murdering three people. The film is a voyage into the abyss of the human soul with Herzog, who meets the families of Perry and Burkett, those of their victims, and US prison workers, to conclude: "The argument that innocent men and women have been executed is, in my opinion, only a secondary one. A state should not be allowed, under any circumstance, to execute anyone for any reason. End of story".
