The death penalty represents the extreme denial of human rights. This cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment, supposedly imposed in the name of “justice”, violates the fundamental right to life proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The international organisations that fight against the death penalty, like Amnesty International, demand a halt to these practices in all cases, with no exceptions, no matter what the nature of the crime committed or the methods used by the states to end the life of the convicted person.
In 2011, the United States was the only country left in the American continent to carry out executions, a total of 43, which took place in 13 of the 34 states that still have the death penalty. Also in 2011, 57 countries in the world continued to dole out the death penalty. According to Amnesty International, at least three of the people executed that same year were under the age of 18.
