1993. During the Bosnian War, a young Serbian soldier called Marko looks on as three others from his outfit brutally beat up a Muslim civilian, Haris. Marko steps in and saves Haris's life, but the three soldiers turn on their comrade and beat him to death.

2008. The war has ended, but its wounds remain open. Marko's father is rebuilding a church. The son of one of the murderers asks him for a job. Marko's best friend as a young boy is now a famous surgeon in Belgrade who is faced with a terrible choice when he has to operate on one of Marko's killers. Haris lives in Germany and finds a way to repay his debt with his saviour.
