In February 1976, eight Sahrawi people disappeared in the Smara region of the desert. A witness told their families that they had been killed by Moroccan troops. On request by AFAPREDESA (Association of Families of Sahrawi Prisoners and Disappeared), a team from the Aranzadi Society of Sciences, the Hegoa Institute and the University of the Basque Country travelled to Western Sahara to look for the missing people.
