The political prisoner Lu Yanshi is set free at the end of the Chinese Cultural Revolution and sent home. On getting there, he discovers that his wife, Feng Wanyu, suffers from amnesia and barely remembers the past. She doesn’t recognise him when he shows up at the door and she won’t let him in. While Lu tries to draw gradually closer to her and recover their life together, Feng continues to wait for the return of her absent husband.

Gong Li stars once again in the latest film from the veteran and multiple awardwinning Zhang Yimou –Ju Dou (1990), The Road Home (1999), The Flowers of War (2011)–, which he once again adapts from a novel by the famous Chinese author Geling Yan.
