The shale gas battle

France. Direction: Lech Kowalski. Production: Odile Allard / Revolt Cinema, ARTE G. E. I. E. Photography: Lech Kowalski. Edition: Lech Kowalski, Marcin Latanik. Running time: 84 min

LANGUAGE: Polish, English / SUBTITLES: Spanish

One day, the inhabitants of a small town in east Poland, near the border with Ukraine, learn that Chevron, the fourth biggest energy corporation in the world, plans to build a well to extract shale gas on their doorstep. At first they don’t think much of it, but looking into it a little more they discover that having the well so near their farms is not a good idea and they start to take action. They talk to politicians and government authorities, but to no avail. When they see the Chevron machines moving into the area, the men and women farmers launch their attack. The North American documentary maker of Polish origin Lech Kowalski –D. O. A. (1980), East of Paradise (2005), Holy Field Holy War (2013)– was there and tells us about it in this documentary.

TALK: Estitxu Villamor (Fracking Ez Gipuzkoa!), Manu González (Cristina Enea Fundazioa)
