On 16th December 2012 a young girl was raped by six men on a bus in New Delhi. She died two weeks later. Based on this true fact and combining documentary with fiction, filmmaker Deepa Mehta sets about analysing what could have led these men to commit such a ferocious act while imagining the life of the girl, her dreams and hopes before the brutal attack ended her life.

How are monsters created? That's the question asked by the film. It looks at the background of these men and at what could have driven them to do what they did. They have been classified as "monsters", but is this a simple label that exempts society and its leaders from the responsibility of taking a deeper look?
