Pederasty in the Church

In 2013 Pope Francis created a special commission to prevent cases of paedophilia and declared that the Church must adhere to a policy of “zero tolerance” for clergy who sexually abuse children. And from 2011 and 2012, Pope Benedict XVI defrocked 400 priests for sexual abuse.

Despite these actions, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (in charge of looking after children) denounced the Vatican in 2014 for failing to recognize the extent of sexual abuse against minors by priests and accused the Catholic Church of adopting policies and practices that led to the continuation of abuses and the impunity of those responsible.

Some internal Vatican statistics indicate that between 1.5% and 5% of Catholic clergy were involved in cases of sexual abuse of minors.

In Spain very few cases have been brought before the courts, and just over a dozen priests have been tried. Very few boys (and still fewer girls) have dared to denounce the ordeal, instead suffering in silence. And when they do find the courage to denounce, in some cases they have seen that their aggressor simply dismissed or temporarily suspended from their duties.

In an appearance before the UN in 2014, the Vatican reported it had received more than 6,000 complaints of child abuse between 2004 and 2013. After studying half of the complaints, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (the body in charge of monitoring the principles of the Catholic Church) dismissed 848 clergy from the priesthood. This is the maximum punishment under canon law. The rest of those involved either received a temporary sanction, were transferred to another parish, or were removed from direct contact with children.

Nonetheless, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child asked the Vatican to immediately dismiss from the priesthood all clergy who have abused children (or are suspected of having done so) and denounce them before the civil authorities.
