The film The Accordionist's Son (Soinujolearen semea / El hijo del acordeonista, 2018), directed by Fernando Bernués, will open the 17th San Sebastian Human Rights Festival, organised by the City Council's Human Rights Department and Donostia Kultura, on April 5 at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre. The Festival will run from April 5-12 at the Victoria Eugenia, main hub of the event, and in various other parts of the city.

David Imaz had to flee from the Basque Country in the mid-seventies, repudiated by his people, accused of betrayal. Despite having found happiness in California, his past still weighs him down and the feeling of guilt prevents him from being able to settle down and peacefully enjoy the last days of his life.

Joseba Altuna, his childhood friend, comes to say goodbye and to settle the score while he's at it. It's been a long time since they saw one another, but the time has come to face the truth in this adaptation of the novel with the same name by Bernardo Atxaga.

The Basque companies Abra Prod and Tentazioa Produkzioak are responsible for this film directed by Fernando Bernués, who adapted the novel to theatre some years back, and who now takes this story to the big screen.

The film stars Aitor Beltrán, Iñaki Rikarte, Cristian Merchán, Bingen Elortza, Frida Palsson, José Ramón Argoitia, Joseba Apaolaza, Mireia Gabilondo, Miren Arrieta and Eneko Sagardoy.

The Accordionist's Son is the first film to enjoy the collaboration of the recently created San Sebastian-Gipuzkoa Film Commission.

The film, distributed by Filmax and Barton Films, will have its commercial release on April 12.
