During the winter of 1944, 21-year-old Lucía returns to a small mountain village. There she meets Manuel, a young blacksmith who collaborates with the mountain men, the "Maquis", guerrilla fighters who, holed up in the sierra, refuse to accept Franco's victory. Lucía finds herself attracted to Manuel and to these men who risk their lives fighting for what they believe in. When Manuel finally takes to the hills, Lucía discovers the reality of the inhospitable mountain life: the empty streets of the town hold nothing but silence and fear.
