In the village of Megende, young farmer Huluager Endeshaw is about to give birth to her fourth child, somewhere between the modern and traditional systems of midwifery, personified in the old midwife Endal Gedif, whose advice she follows, at her local health centre. She tries to balance the role she is expected to play as a mother, a wife and a woman with what she really needs. She finds solace and support in the women of the village and in her son's godfather. As the story proceeds, Hulu unveils her true secrets and, with them, the determination to listen to her heart.
