The transmission of memory as a form of resistance

Lake Tiberias lies in the region of Galilee, currently under Israeli occupation. Up until 1948, the area had a mainly Palestinian population. It is bounded by Lebanon to the north, Jordan to the south, and Syria to the east. Following the Israeli occupation, the population were displaced to these countries.

Various feminist manifestos reflected the situation of women in the region and other parts of Palestine on Women's Day, 8 March. The devastating consequences suffered now and in the past by Palestinian women were denounced, above all now, after 75 years of occupation and militarisation, heightened hostilities, Israeli blockade and segregation policies in breach of international humanitarian law and human rights. Along with the number of women who are refugees and living in exile, who have been denied the right to return to their homes, as the longest-standing refugee population in the world.

The women of Palestine in general, those who were forced to leave and also those who remained, are a symbol of resistance and resilience. They have so far taken on the role of preserving Palestinian cultural identity, generation after generation, sustaining life and devising strategies for survival amid the horrors, despite suffering numerous oppressions and discriminations, in both the public and the private sphere, in a continuum of violence.

Since 7 October 2023, 8,800 of these women have died as a result of the genocide raging in the Gaza Strip. 13,230 children as well. In total, more than 30,000 Palestinian lives have been snuffed out, according to figures from the Gaza Health Ministry as of 1 March 2024.
