Protestar no es un crimen
La creciente criminalización de la desobediencia civil pacífica

Peaceful civil disobedience is a legitimate form of protest, protected by the right of freedom of assembly and expression. Activists around the world make use of this tool in an attempt to increase public familiarity with issues of considerable social interest and human rights problems.

In Spain, housing rights activists, anti-militarist activists and climate activists have turned to non-violent direct action to raise awareness, express social or political disapproval, or to drive legislative changes. Such actions are, however, coming up against growing criminalisation, through arrests and accusations of such serious offences as terrorism or criminal organisation.

Bringing charges of this nature against those participating in peaceful protest action is an improper restriction of freedom of expression and assembly, and could have a deterrent effect, representing a clear threat to the right of protest.

Participants

  • Dani Canales (Amnistía Internacional /  researcher into the right of protest and freedom of expression)
  • Sara López Martín (Greenpeace / activist with expertise in the right of protest)
  • Nate Rugh (Rebelión Científica / environmentalist, climate activist)
