When the Spanish Civil War breaks out in 1936, Miguel is appointed as the parish priest of a socialist-governed village. The insurgents occupy the village, and soon send in their firing squads. In his struggle to protect the victims of their reprisals, Miguel comes into direct conflict with the church and military hierarchy, placing his own life at risk. The young priest finds refuge in his friendship with the village school mistress, whose husband was killed when hostilities first broke out.
