The film Palestine 36 (2025), by Palestinian director Annemarie Jacir, winner of the 2019 Festival Award, will have the honour on 23 April at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre of opening the 23^rd San Sebastian Human Rights Film Festival, organised by the City Council Human Rights Area and Donostia Kultura.

The 23rd San Sebastian Human Rights Film Festival will take place between 23 and 30 April at the Victoria Eugenia, the main setting for the event, and the Teatro Principal, as well as other venues around the city. This year Tabakalera will again be featuring the Film and Memory series, made up of three films analysing the power of images and their importance in recounting History: Mes fantômes arméniens , La noche está marchándose ya and Redlight to Limelight.

As every year, the festival will be addressing a range of topics and stories, including among many others the role of women in religion, the climate emergency in Bangladesh as an example of what is happening in many other regions of the world, the feminisation of precarious working conditions in the textile industry, in this case in Eastern Europe.

The exhibition To Tell My Story - Palestinian Museum Digital Archive, 1948-2023, from the program of the 23rd Human Rights Film Festival, will be open between March 26th and June 6th at Okendo Kultur Etxea.

As in previous years, the photograph featured in the official poster for the 23rd San Sebastian Human Rights Film Festival, to be held between 23 and 30 April 2026 at the Victoria Eugenia and Principal theatres, is the work of Emovere (Jotta Zubiría & Uxue Montero). The poster itself was designed by the Ytantos studio.

Schools can register from today onwards for the screenings offered by the Festival each year for children and young people.

Around a hundred young people aged between 18 and 30 make up the Youth Jury, which will be awarding the Best Short Film Award at the 23rd Human Rights Film Festival (23-30 April).

Submissions for the 23rd San Sebastian Human Rights Film Festival can be made from 17 November to 15 January.

The 22nd San Sebastian Human Rights Film Festival, organised by the Human Rights Area of the City Council and Donostia Kultura, took place between 4 and 11 April, with a wonderful response from the public and a prominent role for Basque cinema.

The film The Story of Souleymane (France, 2024), directed by Boris Lojkine, claimed the Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the 22nd San Sebastian Human Rights Film Festival, which draws to a close tonight at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre.
