Feminist demands in Spain were particularly significant during the years of democratic transition. During this period of the 20th century, women fought for and achieved basic reforms today recognised, at least in theory, by most western democracies: legal equality, equal right to education, a place in the labour market and professional development, the right to divorce and abortion and the creation of specific bodies and institutions to defend and foster equality between women and men.
For many feminist groups, the most important phenomenon in those years was the spreading of a current of opinion breaking with previous rules of male chauvinistic behaviour and rejecting patriarchal attitudes. However, despite these advances, the road to true equality remains long and undoubtedly tortuous.
