Xenophobia and prejudices

The fighting between Serbs and Albanians for sovereignty of the city of Kosovo gave rise to a war responsible for thousands of deaths and refugees. At the end of the conflict, in 1999, a large part of that displaced population returned to their homes. However, the dispute between sides is as yet unsolved, and certain attitudes of hatred and vengeance remain in place, making coexistence impossible as things stand today.

These problems, together with the political, social and economic instability caused by war, mean that thousands of people, particularly youngsters, are considering emigration as their best option for a better future. However, on attempting to reach their destinations, they often run into prejudice and discrimination due to the fact that their very nationality stigmatises them as “conflictive” or problematic.
