After the Rape

Education and violence against women

After the Rape

One woman’s revolution in Pakistan. After having been raped, she could have lived in shame for the rest of her life or have committed suicide. However, Mukhtaran Mai decided to open a school for girls. This woman from a remote hamlet in the Punjab realised that only a change in mentality could end some brutal archaic traditions. Women who have been victims of all types of abuse come to see Mukhtaran looking for help from all parts of the country. She has given them a voice. She has made them aware of their rights. “Violence can only be ended with culture and education.” Five years after the school opened, the girls from Meerwala and the surrounding area study maths and English instead of preparing to be good and submissive wives. They have discovered the meaning of a word: future.
