CRUDE

OIL FIELDS: EFFECTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND ON THE POPULATION

crude

The tale of one of the most famous and large-scale petrol contaminations of all times, the so-called “Amazon Chernobyl”. For three years, the team captained by acclaimed documentary-maker Joe Berlinger - Paradise Lost (1996), Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004) - closely followed the lawsuit brought by 30,000 victims from Ecuador’s Amazon forest against the petrol giant, Chevron. The claimants accused Texaco (which merged with Chevron in 2001) of having systematically contaminated one of the wealthiest, most biodiverse regions on the planet, poisoning the water, the air and the land over three decades, and, as a result, of having caused cancer, leukaemia, growth problems and other disease rates to rocket. For several months, Berlinger and his camera tracked the preparations for the court case.
