This is the story of the American civil rights movement through its powerful music. The freedom songs protesters sang at meetings, on picket lines and in jail cells... while their struggle was at its peak. Featuring new versions of these songs (by artists like John Legend, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean or The Roots), archive footage and interviews with civil rights foot soldiers and leaders including the congressman John Lewis, Harry Belafonte, Julian Bond or the ambassador Andrew Young, the film explores this period in American history.
Freedom songs evolved from slave chants, the labour movement and the black church. Music enabled blacks to sing words they could not say, and it was crucial in helping the protesters as they faced down brutal aggression with dignity and non-violence. The energy of the songs helped people in the fight for their rights.
