Women in White

The “Damas de Blanco” (Women in White) and their struggle to free Cuban political prisoners

Women in White

In March 2003, while the world had its eyes on the US invasion of Iraq, Fidel Castro ordered the arrest of 75 men (journalists, authors, human rights activists) over three nights subsequently labelled as the “Black Spring”. Two weeks later, by that time in April, the wives, mothers, sisters and daughters of the detainees started demanding their freedom. Hence the birth of the “Women in White”. Every Sunday since then, these women dress in white and walk silently through the streets of Havana.
