HUNGER

PRISONERS’ RIGHTS

Hunger

Maze Prison, in Northern Ireland, is out-and-out hell in 1981. The IRA prisoners have been on hunger strike for weeks in the attempt to improve their living conditions, refusing to wear prison clothes or wash themselves. A new inmate, Davey Gillen, joins the protest, landing in a cell with the veteran Gerry Campbell, who gradually introduces him to everyday life in the jail. He soon meets Bobby Sands, leader of the revolt, who is just starting a hunger strike. He also meets Raymond Lohan, one of the prison guards, not an easy job in the complicated territory of Maze prison in the early 80s.

Opera prima from the British artist Steve McQueen, who has exhibited at the biggest museums and galleries worldwide, bagging the prestigious Turner Prize in 1999 and holder of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) since 2002.
