IMMIGRATION AND THE ‘CRIME’ OF SOLIDARITY

Welcome

Bilal, a 17 year-old Kurdish boy from Iraq, has travelled from the land of his birth to join the girl he loves in Britain. But his trip is interrupted in Calais, on the shores of the English Channel, where he has to wait for the chance to cross with hundreds of other illegal immigrants. Having failed in his first attempt, he decides that the best way across is to swim and starts taking lessons at a pool. His instructor, Simon, is gradually drawn into the boy’s life and tries to help him, despite the fact that French law punishes those who aid illegal immigrants.
