LOLA

THIRD AGE IN THE THIRD WORLD

lola

Lola (‘grandmother’ in Tagalo) Sepa’s grandson is killed in an attack to steal his mobile phone. Despite the tragedy, she has to draw herself together and get down to organising the funeral in a Manila lashed by wind and rain. Coming from a poor family unable to afford a coffin or pay for the trial, she sets about finding the money any way she can. Lola Puring, on the other hand, tries to get her grandson out of jail, where he’s being kept until his trial for the murder of Lola Sepa’s grandson. Her heart breaks a little more every time she visits and takes him food.

The two women meet for the first time at the preliminary hearing for the trial. Both are determined to do what they can for their grandsons in this new film from Brillante Mendoza, currently the biggest moviemaker in the Philippines and a regular at major European festivals where he has competed with titles including Serbis (2008) and Kinatay (2009).
